This workshop will provide ideas for greening businesses that are proven and practical. The session will include two case studies of small businesses that are making money as a direct result of their commitment to sustainability, in the following four areas: Energy (buildings and transport), Solid Waste, Water, and Environmental Practices.
Learn how Safe Handling reduces its customers’ transportation costs by up to 50% while reducing emissions by up to 90%. Or how it combines intermodal ransportation, distributed manufacturing, energy efficiency and biofuels to maximize their triple bottom line. Safe Handling is the top performer in the Governor's Carbon Challenge. Andy Meyer is VP Sustainability at Safe Handling and is responsible for finding new business opportunities in the “Green Sector”, for helping Safe Handling operate in a more sustainable manner, and for articulating the sustainable nature of its core businesses. |
After graduating from Bowdoin College, Andy spent eight years as a sales representative with IBM and 14 years as a marketing executive with IDEXX Laboratories. Andy is on the Board of Directors of Environmental & Energy Technology Council of Maine and Maine Interfaith Power & Light. He is also on the Steering Committee of Maine Clean Communities and is an Advisor to Maine Partners for Cool Communities. He lives in Falmouth, Maine.

Wendy Warren is Environmental Coordinator for the City of Bangor and the only municipal employee in Maine whose position was created for the purpose of implementing a wide variety of Environmental Protection & Compliance programs for its 22 departments and 500+ employees. |
Wendy has guided the City of Bangor in its adoption of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Standard and to develop a comprehensive energy conservation management plan. She works with City staff, City Councilors and outside energy experts to translate energy conservation ideas into programs that can be easily adopted by the City and its diverse departments. Wendy challenges all small and large businesses to do the same. |
